EMERGING
LEADERS PROCESS:
AN
INTENSIVE LEARNING DISCIPLINE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF CHURCH LEADERS
WHAT
IS E. L. P.?
The Emerging Leaders Process is
designed for ministers between the ages of 30 and 50, including
senior pastors, church staff ministers and other ministers. It is a
personal and professional growth process that involves peer learning
as well as other forms of leadership enhancement. It is a post-seminary
learning and growth opportunity.
Assignments include reading lists
prior to each of the four sessions, as well as a ministry project (a
"mini-DMin-project" that is relevant and helpful to the
minister's work) to be proposed and completed following each of the
first three sessions.

RATIONALE
AND INTENT OF THE EMERGING LEADERS PROCESS
(developed
and led by Drs. Marilyn C. Nelson and Robert L. Perry)
The Emerging Leaders Process is
an intensive leadership development discipline designed to impact
young (ages 30-50) ministers at a point of optimum learning readiness
and ministry potential. ELP is not a remedial effort; it is designed
to make good ministers better.
One researcher has observed that
there are four possible categories of leadership development readiness:
1. Training.
35% of minister/leaders need to learn and are open to acquiring
additional skills for leadership effectiveness.
2. Coaching.
30% of
minister/leaders are ready for and can benefit from coaching. They
have the needed skills, and they are ready to take advantage of
coaching to help guide their growth journey.
3. Counseling.
25% of minister/leaders actually need counseling to deal with
personal and emotional issues. These persons may not be ready for a
leadership development process until they deal with psycho-therapy needs.
4. Nothing.
10% of minister/leaders may not be accessible for any of the three
approaches listed above. For a variety of reasons there are persons
for whom no growth process will make a significance difference.
The ELP
is designed to address only persons who are ready for training
and coaching.
We are not psycho-therapists. Persons needing intensive counseling
should be referred for such assistance.
ELP is a two-year process that
provides training and coaching. Year one offers four levels of
training for personal and professional development. Year two focuses
on coaching, with peer learning through case study applications and
regular coaching contacts by telephone and email. For both years
there are reading requirements, suggested reading lists and project assignments.
This investment of time and money
will be directed to those who are ready for training and coaching.
The training is focused on leadership skills and practical learning
that are not typically offered in the traditional seminary
curriculum. Numerous instruments and assessments are utilized to
provide insight into leadership strengths and weaknesses.
ELP is led by a husband and wife
team with a combined ministry experience base of eighty years. Dr.
Robert L. Perry has been a pastor, foreign missionary, adjunct
seminary professor and denominational judicatory executive. He has
written and led conferences focused on leadership development and
vision casting for churches and regional judicatories.
Dr. Marilyn C. Nelson has served
as a missionary, a graduate school professor, a church staff member
and a social work administrator. She has specialized in volunteer
management, ministry supervision and mobilization of church laity.
Her doctoral dissertation involved a major research project on the
motivation and retention of volunteers.
Together Dr. Perry and Dr. Nelson
have formed Organizational Health Associates, and through this
non-profit organization, they can be contracted to lead the Emerging
Leaders Process.
COST
OF THE PROCESS
Year One - OHA services (2
leaders for four 3-day seminars) - $1,500.00 per participant

5 books) - $100.00 per particpant
Year Two - OHA services (1

sessions) - $1,275.00 per particpant
Total cost to contracting
institution or group for OHA services - $2,875.00 per participant

suggested that the institution or denomination provide the cost of

congregation to share the other costs. The fee basis for emerging
leaders is based on a minimum participation of 12 persons. The
maximum size of the group is 20 persons.)
