Find A Niche And Scratch It - Marketing Your Congregation

NEW from The Alban Institute!

Jesus was uniquely adept in the art of “reading” people. He fit his approach to the precise needs and interests of the person with whom he was dealing, and he spoke the cultural language of that individual. In this book, Robert Perry takes what Jesus and others have done intuitively—niche marketing—and provides a system for applying those principles in everyday practice.  Convinced that congregations can learn from the wisdom of secular disciplines and apply that wisdom to congregational life, without damaging the integrity of the Christian faith, Perry offers this book.  It provides a detailed process for using sound marketing principles to identify a congregation’s strengths and the needs of its community, and to develop strategies for effective ministry.  Price is $16.00 + $2.00 shipping.

“This experienced consultant has mapped ways church leaders can identify unmet needs and then design ministries to meet those motivated needs.” —Robert D. Dale

History of Values-based Tactical Planning

VTP was developed in 1990 and 1991 by three ministry colleagues in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. Robert Perry, the Executive Director of Mount Vernon Baptist Association and one of the staff of the Association, Stephen Welch, Director of Church Strategies, began to explore alternative planning models for the churches in their area. Ray Spears, pastor of First Baptist Church of Herndon, asked for their assistance in conducting a planning process in his church. Working together, the three of them researched and brainstormed a values-based, right-brain, intuitive method for developing a plan for the church and reshaping the church’s organizational structure. The results were extremely positive.

Perry, Spears and Welch then began to test this planning model in other churches and associations of churches. They wrote the material and created the VTP Manual.  Price is $24.95 + $5.00 shipping.

Values-Based Tactical Planning

Five years later, the process has been field tested in dozens of churches, and consultants have been trained and certified in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

In 1995, Organizational Health Associates was incorporated by Robert Perry and his wife, Marilyn Nelson, as a consulting group and for the distribution of the VTP Manual and other materials on Church Health.

Futuropting is an application of the proven planning method of Multiple Scenario Planning made accessible for churches and religious organizations. During a sabbatical year, author Bob Perry studied materials related to this visionary, long-term approach to strategy. He gleaned the best of the secular methodology and adapted it for use by churches. The book and accompanying workbook provide a step-by-step process by which a pastor or church leader may guide key leaders to explore the plausible future scenarios for the church. As organizational leaders simulate and work through the details of future scenarios they gain insights into the future, experience a lowering of anxiety about the unknown and are more fully prepared to make wise choices about their options.
